Most Exercise Programs Are Missing This - February 21, 2021
Many training programs out there simply focus on 'strengthening' muscles and fail to incorporate one
ESSENTIAL
component...
POWER!
Muscular power improves our functioning as it helps us perform movements forcefully
& quickly.
A great example of this is being able to step your foot out quickly when you lose your balance or trip. Unfortunately, just because you have lots of strength, it doesn't necessarily mean that you have lots of power.
This short story will help clearly convey this point:
Meet Bill. He is a taller than average male in
his late 60s. Many people are impressed to see
him perform his sets on the leg press machine with the
full weight stack, which is around 500 lbs. However,
once he got off the machine you would notice something
completely different – he could hardly walk.
Bill took small shuffling steps, used a cane,
held on to objects around him for support,
and paused frequently to regain his sense of
balance. Bill suffers from Parkinson’s
disease, which has very little effect on his
leg press perfo rmance, but large effects on his
functional task performance. Muscle strength
is NOT his issue.
